The event focused on topics ranging from copyrighting software and patenting technical inventions to norms and standards in support of market entry. Becker reports that the chief message of the event was “Secure your ideas”, and that discussion rapidly centred on the advantages and disadvantages of norms, standards and patents. While a standard, an agreed way of doing something, required the agreement of the whole sector, a patent conferred the exclusive rights to an invention for a period of time in return for public disclosure of how the invention functioned in the interests of passing on knowledge for the good of society.
