Soil salinisation is one of the most serious threats to agricultural land and natural ecosystems in Europe. Rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns and intensive land use are exacerbating the problem – with far-reaching consequences for farmers, water supplies and biodiversity.
Since 1 July 2026, the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) has been coordinating the EU-funded SaliNova project. Under the scientific leadership of Prof. Nima Shokri from the Institute of Hydrogeoinformatics, 19 partner organisations from 12 countries are developing modern tools for monitoring, predicting and mitigating soil salinisation in Europe. The project is receiving €6 million in funding under the EU’s Horizon Europe programme.
Key findings include the first pan-European harmonised assessment of soil salinisation, standardised risk maps across Europe, and a decision support toolbox designed to provide targeted support to decision-makers in politics and agriculture. Nature-based solutions – including the use of salt-tolerant plants and adaptive irrigation methods – are being tested and evaluated at six demonstration sites.
