Success Story Elementarhy: Towards a circular economy in hydrogen production with Up2Circ

The circular economy is a key component of sustainable innovation in Europe. The EU project Up2Circ supports small and medium-sized enterprises in establishing resource-efficient processes and developing new business models.

One outstanding example is Elementarhy GmbH, which has implemented a circular solution for hydrogen production as part of Up2Circ.

Elementarhy develops membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) for PEM water electrolysers and relies on an ‘MEA-as-a-Service’ model. Customers receive MEAs as part of a service contract, including delivery, maintenance and return. At the end of their service life, the MEAs are taken back, valuable materials such as iridium are recycled, and titanium components are reused after cleaning and recoating. The feasibility study funded by Up2Circ showed that reducing the use of iridium and efficient recovery can significantly reduce dependence on primary raw materials and environmental impact. The technical feasibility and economic advantages have been confirmed – especially in view of rising raw material prices.

Service model with high acceptance

The innovative service model is impressive not only because of its resource efficiency, but also because of its high level of acceptance among customers: predictable costs, lower maintenance requirements and reduced disposal risks make the offer attractive. Elementarhy works closely with partners along the hydrogen value chain and contributes to the practical implementation of the European Green Deal’s goals.

Up2Circ and TUTECH support companies such as Elementarhy with advice, networking and targeted funding. Elementarhy’s success story shows how European funding programmes enable sustainable business models and accelerate the transition to a circular economy.

Discovering the opportunities of the circular economy with Up2Circ

The circular economy offers companies opportunities to turn to resource-saving processes, maximise the use of existing assets and open up new business models. But how can this be done concretely and which conversion measures would best suit your company? With the EU Up2Circ project, SMEs can discover the opportunities of the circular economy, increase their knowledge, develop an action plan and get financial support for implementation projects.
