Innovation and sustainability in focus
Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) has won the renowned “Hamburg 2040” award, the Hamburg Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) Future Prize. The prize was presented during the IHK summer party. It recognises the outstanding contributions of TUHH to the city’s economic and social development.
TUHH impressed the judges with its innovative strength, its role model function and its sustainable contribution to Hamburg’s future viability. Particular emphasis was placed on the high number of successful start-ups, including traceless, Lignopure, Infinite Roots and Colipi, which are setting new standards in environmental technology, biotechnology and circular economy. In the past year alone, these start-ups succeeded in winning more than €150 million of venture capital.
A further milestone is the new excellence cluster “BlueMat: Water-Driven Materials”, which demonstrates the research strength of TU Hamburg at the highest scientific level. Here environmentally friendly materials are being developed that change when they come into contact with water – a project that, according to Hamburg’s Deputy Mayor Katharina Fedebank, “sounds like science fiction but is becoming reality at the TU”.
TUHH also plays a key role in the development of Hamburg’s south. It boosts innovative strength locally, encourages the establishment of companies and contributes significantly to urban and industrial development around Hamburg-Harburg and the port area.
The judges, high-ranking representatives of business, academia and the media, rated TUHH as an outstanding example of the close links between research, business and society. TUHH President Prof. Andreas Timm-Giel was delighted to accept the prize: “This award is a recognition of our most recent successes in research and application. As a university of technology, our ambition is to develop technology for people and to work together with industry and society to put it into practice.”
