Hacker School’s international expansion into Austria, facilitated by the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) at Tutech, has been recognised as one of the three best business partnerships in Europe in 2024.
The Hamburg-based non-profit organisation, which teaches children and young people about programming, has successfully entered the Austrian market with professional support from EEN.
Dr Julia Freudenberg, CEO of Hacker School, was named “Female Impact Entrepreneur of the Year” at the German Startup Awards. Her vision is clear: she aims to give one million children a year the chance to gain programming experience by 2030. ‘Every young person should have tried their hand at programming at least once before deciding on a career,’ says Freudenberg. The organisation brings IT professionals into schools as “Inspirers” and works with companies and universities to promote digital education.

Tangible successes and further expansion
Since its launch in Austria, Hacker School has already reached 3,300 children and young people across almost all regions of the country. The branch employs five staff and aims to reach 100,000 children annually. In Germany, the organisation had already reached 27,000 children by 2024, in partnership with over 370 schools. Its tried-and-tested prototyping methodology enables parallel development in both markets.
